How To Let Golf Lessons Help Your Golf Game

Golf Lesson #1: The Importance of Golf Lessons

Will golf lessons help you improve your golf technique? Well, if you consider the fact that as good as the top PGA golfers (including Tiger Woods) are, most of them continue to get golf instruction throughout their careers, then the chances are that your golf technique will benefit from golf lessons as well.

That said, there are some instances in which taking lessons will NOT benefit your game. What are they?

* You either settle for the first golf instructor you find, without taking the time to see if he or she has a teaching style which will be helpful–or can’t afford the cost of a really qualified instructor;

* You don’t want to hear constructive criticism and aren’t willing to wait to see improvements in your game

* You don’t intend to practice the golf techniques which you learn from your lessons.

If you begin your golf lessons with the attitude that you already know what you are doing, you probably won’t be very receptive if your instructor tries to introduce you to new approaches to your shots, or suggests you work on the parts of your game which you thought you had under control. And if your idea of successful golf instruction includes the notion that it will let you shave five strokes off your game in a matter of a week, you should limit your golf lessons to the sort that you can download from the Internet, because they are almost the only ones which promise such results.

It’s simply a matter of time before the ideas which your golf lessons plant in your head actually begin to affect the way you execute your golf shots, and for some golfers the time will be shorter than for others. So you will need to exercise patience, practice with determination, and above all, not give up on what you have learned before you give it a fair chance to make a difference in your game.

If you are just taking up golf, you should be especially careful when it comes to choosing a golf instructor. Because you are new to the game, you probably haven’t had the time to develop bad habits, and that’s definitely in your favor. But you are also highly susceptible to getting off on the wrong foot, and permanently damaging your game, if you have poor golf instruction.

You may be thinking that since you started with used golf clubs or discount golf equipment, you can get by with a few inexpensive lessons. The problem is that if you get bad advice, you will find yourself struggling around the course and developing a bad golf technique, perhaps blaming your lack of talent, your choice of golf club sets or the bad condition of the course. You may never realize that you have been victimized by bad instruction. Your golf career will be nipped in the bud.

The short answer to the question of whether golf lessons can help you when you are learning the game, therefore, is that it’s always harder to undo bad habits than it is to build good ones.

But if you’re new to the game and simply can’t afford lessons, don’t fall into the trap of taking advice from your playing partners, no matter what their level of experience nor how kind their intentions. Restrict your play to developing your skills at the driving range or working on your short game with your golf wedges, taking as long as you need to find your natural swing.

Then, and only if you become convinced that you want to go further with golf, you may decide that golf lessons would be worth sacrificing some other part of your disposable income expenses.

When you decide to commit to a series of golf lessons, look for an instructor who will work with your existing level of skill, and can analyze the different components of you swing so that you can make the necessary changes. Having a good golf instructor means having someone who can spot the flaws in your positioning, and that alone is worth every penny.

No one can force you to take golf lessons. But the earlier in your golf career that you decide to take golf instruction from a qualified teacher, the more quickly your skills will improve, and you may well end up saving money in the long run, because you won’t be tempted to run out and invest in a set of clubs as the solution to your difficulties. If getting good golf instruction is important to the likes of Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Nick Faldo, and Mark O’Meara (and it is), what do you think it will do for you?
